The Science of...LOVE

For some reason, around Valentines, I get the urge to teach Jackson something.  When he was one, I ambitiously tried to teach him a letter a day.  Some years, we have used the stethoscope to listen to each others hearts.  Last year, Jackson learned I Corinthians 13 and all about "love is kind."  Which was much more worthwhile than this year's "lesson."

Since today is Winter Break, we had the time to study some science.

We started with our guess (hypothesis):  If you drink a love potion, you will fall in love.  Jackson predicted the hypothesis was true.  We gathered our materials and set out to conduct our experiment.

First, we discussed the difference between liquids and solids.  Always looking for new ways to practice handwriting, we labeled our solids, sodu (soda),  sot (salt), and shooga.

Then, we commenced to measuring, mixing and observing.  We talked about our five senses.  Jackson tasted, smelled, and looked.

The priceless reaction was Jackson's as the soda and vinegar began to fizz.

Memorable quotes from our day:

"This is the best experiment ever!"

"We're the first African scientists, right?"  (wrong!?)

"I'm the Statue of Vamilla!"

On July 31st, Jackson turned five and a half!  Our celebrations were slightly delayed by a very successful garage sale.  After I picked Jackson up from school on Monday, he played for about an hour until I could finally convince him to leave the house.  We went to the mall where we got a celebratory cookie cake and Jackson built his very own camouflage teddy bear.

Coming soon:  Valentines celebrations.

Happy New Year!

Despite my lack of blogging, 2013 has gotten off to a fabulous start!  Very few hiccups or problems in the first month of the year.  We are sticking with our New Years Resolutions which include eat less cheese, take vitamins, make believe, and read picture books.  For the most part, we stayed home with the exception of some birthday parties, a visit to the zoo with Elyssa and Ethan and an impromptu trip to Medieval Times.  We  have been reading winter books, playing penguin games and even carved penguins.
